Meet Avi: I adopted her from Cleveland Animal Control in Cleveland, TN, with the intent to foster on December 3rd. So she has been with me for almost a month at this point, and I believe she is ready to find her forever home! Avi is the SWEETEST dog I have ever had the pleasure of fostering; she loves to snuggle and tries very hard to be best friends with the three other dogs in the house. Those dogs, by the way, are a German Shepherd, Shepherd mix, and Chiweenie, and she plays perfectly with each one. I have also taken her to my work, which is at a doggie daycare, and have had her interact with the dogs in both small and big play areas. She remained the same sweet, submissive dog I know her to be, but was a little more wary due to the environmental difference between being at home and being at a busy daycare facility. Avi is about 45 pounds, spayed, UTD on all her vaccines (including bordetella), and heartworm negative! She is also crate-trained, but will whimper mournfully if she knows there are people or dogs out in another room. If you tell her to be quiet she silences immediately and remains that way for a spell. As far as her training goes: she is wickedly smart, and needs a high-quality treat or toy to captivate her attention. She knows how to do some of the basics - sit and down for example - but can be very choosy about when she does them. She can become bored with training very quickly, so I keep her sessions short. She does not do anything on command just yet. I'd like to see her go to a home that will continue training with her. She is not a bad dog in the slightest or terribly undisciplined, but she is the kind of dog that will bond strongly with her handler through training, which is why I have been hesitant to pursue working with her. I have allowed her to sleep freely in my room with me and trust her, but she will stick that nose of hers in places it does not belong! She also has been caught counter surfing, the little weasel. Whippet Dogs can make good pets in Tennessee if they match your IifestyIe. The Whippet is a small, elegant, Greyhound-like breed. Whippets are calm and affectionate. Whippets are excellent with respectful children and get along fine with dogs. A Whippet is not a good choice for a home with non-canine pets. Whippets need to be protected from extreme cold. With enough exercise, a Whippet does fine in an apartment or a home with a small yard.
